Every novel in the Poldark series that I have read is engaging, with plots linking well rounded characters depicted in a time of class division, poverty and war. Obviously the writer has done a vast amount of research into the politics and living conditions of the period but he brings it alive with themes that touch all of us and tempers more sober themes with delightful humour whether it be the dry comments of the more cynical of his protagonists or the naive behaviour and statements of his country bumpkins, reminiscent of some of Thomas Hardy's characters in "Under the Greenwood Tree." All this is set in Cornish locations described vividly by someone who loves the area. I thoroughly recommend this novel.
